Hey everyone! π
Coccidiosis is one of the most common and deadly diseases in chickens, especially in young birds. It’s caused by a parasite that attacks the intestines, leading to bloody diarrhea, weakness, and death if untreated. The good news? It’s preventable with the right care!
π How Do Chickens Get Coccidiosis?
- Spread through poop – Chickens ingest the parasite (coccidia) when pecking at contaminated bedding, feed, or water.
- Thrives in wet, dirty coops – Damp, warm environments make coccidia multiply fast.
- Young birds are most at risk – Chicks and pullets under 12 weeks old are especially vulnerable.
β How to Prevent Coccidiosis in Your Flock
1οΈβ£ Keep Bedding Dry & Clean ποΈ
- Damp conditions = coccidia paradise. Keep the coop dry and change bedding regularly.
- Use deep litter method with dry pine shavings or sand to absorb moisture.
2οΈβ£ Use a Coccidiosis-Preventing Feed π₯£
- Medicated chick starter contains amprolium, which helps prevent coccidiosis in young birds.
- For non-medicated feed: Add probiotics or natural immune boosters (like apple cider vinegar).
3οΈβ£ Provide Clean, Fresh Water Daily π§
- Dirty water = perfect place for coccidia to spread.
- Add apple cider vinegar (1 tbsp per gallon) to boost gut health.
4οΈβ£ Avoid Overcrowding π§
- Too many chickens in a small space = faster disease spread.
- Make sure each bird has at least 4 sq. ft. in the coop and 10 sq. ft. in the run.
5οΈβ£ Rotate Pasture & Keep the Run Dry πΏ
- If possible, move the run every few weeks to prevent buildup of parasites in the soil.
- Use gravel or sand in muddy areas to stop standing water.
6οΈβ£ Natural Prevention Methods πΏ
- Oregano & garlic – Natural immune boosters against intestinal parasites.
- Probiotics (yogurt, fermented feed) – Helps keep the gut healthy.
π¨ What If Your Flock Gets Coccidiosis?
- Symptoms: Lethargy, puffed-up appearance, bloody or watery diarrhea, weight loss.
- Treatment: Amprolium (Corid) added to water for 5-7 days.
- Isolate sick birds and sanitize the coop immediately.
