Hey everyone! π
Chickens are masters at hiding illness (a survival instinct to avoid looking weak), so spotting early signs of sickness can save a hen’s life and prevent disease from spreading. Knowing what to look for helps you act fast before a minor issue becomes serious.
π Early Warning Signs of Illness
π Behavioral Changes
- Lethargy – Sitting puffed up, avoiding the flock
- Isolation – Staying away from other birds, not scratching or foraging
- Unusual Posture – Hunched over, drooping wings, or standing still for long periods
π Changes in Appetite & Drinking
- Not eating or drinking normally
- Refusing favorite treats (a red flag!)
- Excessive drinking (possible kidney issues or heat stress)
π Egg Production Issues
- Sudden drop in laying (can be normal with molting, but watch for other symptoms)
- Thin, misshapen, or shell-less eggs (could indicate nutritional deficiency or disease)
π Respiratory Symptoms
- Sneezing, coughing, wheezing
- Nasal discharge or swollen eyes
- Stretching neck out when breathing (could indicate respiratory infection)
π Digestive & Droppings Check
- Watery, green, or bloody poop (could mean worms, coccidiosis, or infection)
- Pasty vent (pasty butt) – A sign of digestive upset or stress
- Crop issues – Sour crop (squishy, sour-smelling) or impacted crop (hard lump)
π Feather & Skin Health
- Feather loss (not molting) – Possible parasites or stress
- Pale comb & wattles – Could indicate anemia (mites, lice, or internal parasites)
- Scaly, crusty legs – Sign of scaly leg mites
