Hey everyone! π
So, you’re ready to take the plunge into chicken keeping—exciting! π₯ Raising chickens is fun, rewarding, and a great step toward self-sufficiency, but if you’re new to it, it can feel overwhelming at first.
Here’s a quick beginner’s guide to getting started:
β 1. Pick the Right Breed
- Looking for tons of eggs? Try Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, or Australorps.
- Want friendly, docile birds? Buff Orpingtons, Cochins, and Silkies are great choices.
- Need cold-hardy or heat-tolerant breeds? Research what works best for your climate.
β 2. Build a Safe Coop & Run
- Plan for at least 3-4 sq. ft. per bird inside the coop and 10 sq. ft. per bird in the run.
- Make sure your coop is predator-proof—raccoons, hawks, and foxes will test it!
- Good ventilation is key to keeping your flock healthy.
β 3. Choose the Right Feed
- Chicks (0-8 weeks): Start them on chick starter with high protein.
- Pullets (8-18 weeks): Transition to grower feed.
- Laying Hens (18+ weeks): Switch to layer feed with calcium for strong eggshells.
β 4. Be Prepared for Common Challenges
- Chickens will test your fencing—they love to explore!
- They stop laying eggs in winter unless you supplement light.
- They have personalities! Some will be friendly, some bossy, and some just weird. π
