  • Greetings to all!

Hello Coop24, are you Anakin? Thanks for all the work involved in setting up a website and forum. Hope you prosper!

I found the website via the Unwanted Farm Animals FB Group. I found that group in search of a breeding age rooster to rescue.

I've had a flock of some sort for about 14 years but I still consider myself a novice. Least so, in regard to someone who really knows poultry.

Recently aquired what I believe to be a pretty decent incubator (GQF 1502) so I'm looking to learn about the small scale hatchery.

πŸ“ Where are you from? >> Close to Colbert, OK

πŸ“ What does your flock look like?

    >> Last count, 16. Leghorn, Plymouth Rock, Americauna. Some have aged out, very little production. The largest my flock has ever been is 27.

    🏑 What’s your setup like?

    >> We have some acreage with plenty of room to spare. We have an "A" frame roost that is separate from the "chicken yard and eggshed". They mostly follow me up to the yard when I let them out in the mornings. They free range most of the time but I go through phases of pinning them up for a half day so as to make egg collection a little easier. They do lay in other areas though. The kids enjoy finding their nests.

🌿 What’s one thing you love about homesteading or raising chickens?

    >>We enjoy having fresh eggs and sharing them with family. We have never tried to profit in any way. We have given away as much as  50 pounds of eggs at a time to the local food bank.

First chance I get I will post about my intentions with the incubator and my need to build a better setup.

  • Hey RL, thanks so much for joining us here on the forum and introducing yourself! I just wanted to clarify that I'm not actually Anakin, though I'm sure he's around here somewhere and will be glad to have you as part of the community.

The GQF 1502 is an excellent choice, as it's designed to provide the optimal environment for embryo development. Maintaining stable temperature and humidity, ensuring proper ventilation and egg turning, and resisting the urge to interfere once hatching begins are all key for a successful hatch. Of course, there's always more to learn, and you seem to have a great attitude about embracing the process and learning as you go.

I'd love to hear more about your plans for integrating the new chicks into your existing flock and any changes you might make to your coop setup to accommodate them. It's an exciting time of growth and new beginnings! Please keep us posted on your incubator journey - the triumphs, the lessons learned, and all the fluffy cuteness in between. Wishing you all the best as you embark on this new chapter in your chicken keeping adventure!

πŸ“ What does your flock look like? 2 Roos, 1 golden comet, 1 guinea hen, 4 peking ducks (2 hens 2 drakes), and 18 chicks hatched this week (supposed to be all hens but 1 and includes buff Orpington, Barred Rock, Welsummer and a group of blue egg layers).
🏑 What’s your setup like? We're on 8 acres surrounded by cattle land. We free range. 2 coops, but they don't even use them anymore...We also are raising a hog for butchering.
🌿 What’s one thing you love about homesteading or raising chickens? Still new...this is our 3rd year. Love having fresh eggs!

  • Hey Chick Chief! πŸ‘‹

Welcome to The Rustic Coop! Sounds like you’ve got an awesome little homestead going onπŸ₯ Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Welsummers, and blue egg layers? That’s a solid mix for a colorful egg basket.

Free-ranging on 8 acres sounds like a dream, even if the coops have become more of a decorative feature at this point. πŸ˜† And raising a hog too? That’s the kind of self-sufficient homesteading we love to hear about!

Fresh eggs are definitely one of the best perks of this lifestyle. What’s been the biggest lesson or surprise in your three years of raising chickens? Looking forward to hearing more about your journey and seeing how your flock grows!

Glad to have you here—make yourself at home! πŸ‘πŸ“πŸŒΏ

  • Hi my name is Melissa, we've had 20 chickens for the last year. 13 hens and 7 Roos... we keep the Roos separate for now (as we all know, we didn't expect to have so many Roos) We plan on adding more hens specifically as time moves on and we get settled with them and get out runs the way we want them. I love taking care of them. And am just trying to get it all straightened out before I ad more fluffy butts to my flock. The girls at work call me the Chicken Tender.

  • Hi! I'm a newbie. I have a piece of property that I'm hoping to be on by next spring. Backyard chickens(4) and a duck is what I have. I started w 17 chicks in Oct and I'm left w 4, of which 3 are roos. Just got 8 more chicks of which I hope to get a few more hens. Shawnee is home but land is by Seminole.

I luv my babies! Never thought this would be me but, yeah, we're doing it.

If anyone has advice for me, I could sure use it.

  • Hi there!

I'm Courtney from Newalla. I've been raising chickens for about 8 years now. I accidentally got out of chickens for awhile. Got wiped out by predators last year. Rebuilt, and now I have 4 sexlinks and 2 I don't knows πŸ˜… maybe Cornish cross? I got them from the animals shelter for $2. I just got sick of paying for eggs when I already had everything for chickens.

  • Darrell here, I have a flock of 11 on 3/4acre in okc(most of which I traded and bout from Anakin).

I got a post on Facebook about joining the forum for a giveaway drawing but I do not see any instructions about it here.  Any help?

  • πŸ‘‹ hi there

    Where are you from?

    Shawnee, OK

What does your flock look like?

18 chickens altogether. Very mixed flock. From Brahmas to D'Uccles to Bantam Polish to an Ayam Cemani. I want 'em all πŸ™ƒ. Half my flock is laying fantastically and the other half are only a few months old. In 2024 I got spring chicks and then immediately after getting our first egg i got fall chicks πŸ˜…

    What’s your setup like?

We've just got a backyard flock. We have 2 separate coops and runs. (Big girls coop and little girls coop). Once the littles are grown we plan to invest in a big nice single coop with a big big run. They all get free range time in the evenings.

What’s one thing you love about raising chickens?

Everything. I love having them as pets, I love getting eggs, giving eggs, watching them, and I even like doing the "not so fun" parts; cleaning the coops, runs, waterers, etc. I just love 'em.

I have a blue splash ameraucana named Opal that does the cutest little peeps and runs up to me like she's asking for "picky-upies". Melts me heart. πŸ’–
